Sign Up for a UMLS Terminology Services Account

(Request a UMLS Metathesaurus License)

A UMLS Terminology Services (UTS) account will give you access to the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), the Value Set Authority Center (VSAC), RxNorm, SNOMED CT, the NIH Common Data Elements (CDE) Repository, and other services that require a UMLS Metathesaurus License.

Step 1: Authenticate by selecting one of the identity providers listed below. If you do not have an account with one of the identity providers listed, you must create one.

Step 2: Once you have authenticated using one of the identity providers below, scroll through the UMLS Metathesaurus License and agree to the license terms.

Step 3: Once you have agreed to the license terms, fill out the web form and submit your request. NLM will review your license request within 3 business days. Once your request is approved, NLM will send you an email with more information, and you will be able to sign in to services that require a UMLS Metathesaurus License.

Q: Why do I need to select an identity provider?
A: You will use one of the identity providers listed above to sign in to services that require a UMLS license.

Q: I usually sign in with a UTS username and password. What happened to that?
A: We are no longer supporting username/password sign in. Instead, you will sign in with your email address using one of the identity providers above.

Q: I selected "Microsoft" and tried to sign in using my work email address, but it didn't work. What should I do?
A: Your organization may not allow you to sign in to external services using your Microsoft credentials. Try one of the following options:

Q: What if I want to sign up for a UTS account / license but I don't have an account with any of the identity providers listed above?
A: Create an account with Login.gov by going to https://secure.login.gov/sign_up/enter_email. Then go to https://uts.nlm.nih.gov/uts/signup-login, select Login.gov, and sign in if prompted. Agree to the license terms and complete the web form to request an account.

Q: I am an NIH employee. Which option should I choose?
A: Choose "NIH Employee" and sign in with your PIV card or NIH credentials.

Q: I have a question that isn't covered here. Who can I ask?
